..........Sugababes UK smash hit: 'Overload'..........
Teen FX ran a contest where we asked our users if they wanted to come in to interview the Sugababes, and we had tons of input from everybody. Our users submitted the questions that they would like to ask the Sugababes and we picked the most enthusiastic fan to come in and interview the group in person!! We came up with Samantha who is a great fan and asked some great questions.
Samantha: How and when did you first come together to form this band?
Keisha: Mutya and I have known each other since we were 8 years old, we went to primary school together. We met Siobhan when we were 13. We were introduced to Siobhan by a friend of Muyta's. It was about 3 months later that the band was formed.
Were you influenced by other musicians, or your parents, to get involved in the music business? And, how did you start in this very competetive industry.
We were influenced by Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, and others. Our parents were never musicians or singers, although there was always music around the house.
We let our music do the talking and see how people would take it. We have been pretty lucky. Everyone has just liked our stuff so far. We haven't really had to do too much.
Had you been to music classes or been taught to sing prior to coming together?
Actually in the begining although we were always singers it was kind of hard for us as we had never been taught the right way to sing. We would sing from our throats so we were told that before we ruin our voices we would need to get help from a vocal trainer. He basically taught us to breathe from our diaphragms. We had 3 months of tuition. It was quite good. It really helped us.
Do any of you know how to play a musical instrument?
Sibohan: We are all learning. I can play a few chords on the guitar and would really like to learn. I want to learn how to play properly before we start recording our next album. It will be really helpful.
Congratulations on your nomination for the Best British Single in the 2001 Brit Awards. Did you have any idea that within a year of being out, you would be nominated for the best British single? Your hit single "Overload" was quite an accomplishment. How did you think of the lyrics?
Personally I did!! Our single came out too late. The competition was so good. There are so many bands in the UK that have been out for over a year. We had only been out six months and were so happy to have been nominated.
Overload wasn't recorded like the rest of the album. Our producer had a session where we were throwing lyrics around. It was a complete accident. We had no idea of what we had done. It was about two weeks later that we realized what we had produced.
Since you are travelling a lot, and are only 15 and 16 years of age, how do you manage to do all your homework?
Keisha: Sibohan finished last summer. When back in the UK Mutya and I get home tutors. We are never away from home for more than 5 days.
How do you plan to become big in the USA, and do you like the USA.? Anything to tell TeenFX users?
We are just going to be ourselves. We will use our same videos and will let the music do all the talking!
Sibohan has been here many times. But this is Mutya's and my first time to America and we are enjoying ourselves very much. I think the US is cool and I would like to be here all the time now!
We hope TeenFX users will support us and that they like our album.
I notice that your music is influenced by R&B, quite unique to all other girl bands that are out now. Who are your favorite artists, and do you have any role models?
Destiny's Child, DMX, Jay-Z. We don't really have any role models but admire Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey.
Have your lives changed a lot since you have become so popular?
It has changed a tiny bit. But we still do the same things that we used to do before.
Because Mutya is only 15 we can only work 72 days a year in the UK. We get weekends off, and as our friends are in school we don't get to see them during the week anyway.
What's the best or worst part of being on stage or when it is live?
When it's live you get a tiny bit more nervous, because there's no doing it over again. No second chances.
Do you get nervous or the 'butterflys'? And do you have a routine before you go on stage?
Mutya: Sometimes.
Sibohan: Gosh, I do
Keisha: I don't really. I make sure I keep my energy up before I go on the stage.
We pray before we go on stage, and they relax, and I sit down and think about what is going on.
There are many fans who would love to hear some tips from you on how to become big in the music industry. What tips would you offer?
We did not have to audition, but if you have the raw talent and you get out there then someone will recognize that. Don't let anyone tell you you are not good enough.
Note: Sugababes album "One Touch" to be released June 26th.
I think sugababes r wkd an think they av come this far they shuld go further!frm lizzy

When I was in London I kept reading about the 'Sugar Babies' in the teen magazines and I also heard their recordings playing in shops. Their sound is distinctive and I really like them.

They ARE internationally popular. I live in Singapore (What a crappy country) and Sugababes are well known here! Their new album, Three is great. There's a song in there called "Too Lost In You" and it's a chart topper here! So, my point is... That Sugababes ARE internationally popular.

hey, i really like the dark coloured girl, because she seems more down to earth. The other two (meaning the new one and the chinese girl) seem like they think they are better than they are... so on... but i really like there music... but, i can't believe they are that young, they look so much older!!!

i live in england and so was surprised 2 find that they had fans in america aswell. Siobhan left the band a few months ago unfortuneatly and Heidi is their newest member, luckily she fits in well with the rest of the band. Their first single with her was a cover of Adina Howard's 'Freak like me' and went straight 2 number 1 over here!

omg...i remember last year they had a conest for the sugababes, and they would fly you in and take you out to lunch and everything....you had to write why you wanted it most, and than teenfx would chose a winner...i entered the contest AND I WON! teenfx called me up, and wrote me a e-mail saying congrad's you won and stuff like that...than they said how old were you and i said 12 and they were like oh sorry, you had to be 13 to enter....BUT I HAD ALLREADY WON! doesnt that suck? than they found another person, and sent me a autograph....it was so unfair...i won, and they said so, then they tryed to undo what they said cus they found out i wasnt 13 when i was 12 and a half....what do yall think???
