Bill O'Reilly

What is your occupation and position? In addition to being a re-knowned television personality, journalist and bestselling author, you now have a new book that focuses on “survival” techniques for teens. This book shows a different side to you than the common perception of your being a tough, hard-hitting, controversial interviewer. Is the real Bill O’Reilly a more sensitive and compassionate person than the host we see on Fox television?

The O'Reilly Factor for Kids has a lot in common with what I do on TV, radio and in print. It is a straight forward guide that advises kids what they need to succeed.

The book does not pander or try to persuade. It comes straight at you with information and strategies that will make you happier. Some kids will ignore the advice but many will not. Those who choose to follow this "survival guide" will have a big advantage.

Why did you write a book for teens? All teens can use good, sound advice, but what promoted and motivated you, at this time of your life, to write a book on children?

I wrote the book because I wish I had had this mind of strategy when I was growing up. It is tough being a kid these days. Life is very complicated and confusing. I wanted to dispense some advice that kids have asked me for via email and letters. So that's why I wrote the book.

Teens that know of you, think of you as a very conservative, authoritative person. Why should they read your book when they usually do not listen to their parents’ advice, and what do you think you can tell them that they cannot hear from their teachers, parents or church leaders?

Teens and preteens are often in rebellion that's just the way it is. But most kids know who I am and that I am a "no bull" kind of guy. I think teens especially respond to that style. Plus I am very successful in a glamour industry. That usually gets the attention of teenagers.

You clearly are not a fan of Eminem, yet his music is bought by millions of teens. In your book, you emphasize that his music is full of hatred, violence and drug promotion. Isn’t it only adults that take the lyrics to heart? Don’t teens just listen to music for the voice, cadence, and rhythm while accepting that the lyrics are just words and not advice to be taken seriously?

Rap and hip hop that celebrates anti-social behavior is deceiving. Some kids can shrug off the bad messages and just enjoy the beat, but others imitate the obscenities and other demeaning lyrics.

My job is to hold adults who are harming children responsible for their actions. People like Eminem don't hurt all kids but they do hurt some. That's why he gets it from me.

You show a very understanding view on teenage sexuality. In your chapter on sex you imply that sex is not “off limits” for teens, yet schools typically teach abstinence. Don’t you think you are too liberal in your views on teen sex?

My job is not to make moral judgments about sexual activity. My job is to tell kids it is usually harmful to them because most teenagers cannot possibly process the emotional impact it has.

Remember, sex involves two people and often one or both partners wind up hurt in some way. Casual sex is often disastrous to young lives and kids should be very, very careful indulging. And that's the truth.

In the health section you discussed obesity, yet anorexia, chronic illness and disabilities are common in children. Why did you only focus on obesity?

We focused on obesity because it is by far the most common and most difficult situation for American kids vis-a-vis food. Anorexia is a psychological problem and this book is not trying to take the place of treatment by trained mental health professionals.

There are three main drives in life; food, sex, and sleep. Your book deals with most areas of interest to teens and you dealt with food and sex but did not address sleep. Research has shown that most teenagers are sleep-deprived and sleep is a very important part of their life. Did you accidentally leave out this topic?

Sleep is a passive activity and one that we did not address because, again, the problem of sleep is usually dealt with in the mental health arena. If teens simply are exhausting themselves there's little I can say except don't and that would be a short chapter.

In your chapter on self-esteem you state “The fake self-esteem doled out by parents and teachers today is poison.” It is clear that helping teens improve their self-esteem is very important to you. Why are you so passionate about this topic?

American kids need to wise up about this self-esteem business. The only way you can build confidence is by accomplishing things.

That means trying your hardest to succeed in whatever you decide to pursue. It is honest effort that builds character which is really what self-esteem is all about. All these adults blowing smoke at you will not help you succeed in life. This book tells kids what they really need to do.

Do you believe that your book will change the behavior and attitudes of those teens who read it, or will they view it as “the same old stuff” just written in a different style?

The O'Reilly Factor for kids will help kids who want to be helped. It will not help teens who are delf-destructive or who are not ready to hear the truth about life.

When I taught high school I reached most of my students but not all. Some were so damaged nobody could reach them. But this book is so in-your-face that any kid reading it will have to do at least some thinking. And that's a start.

Were there any topics that were too controversial for teens and left out of the final version of your book? If so, what were they, and if not, what additional topics would you have liked to have included?

I put everything in the book that I thought American kids should know about. Obviously, there are other topics like sleep which you mentioned. But this book should get you through the most common problems and lead teens to talk about important things rather that the latest rap song. See, I'm down on that rap.

How should teens use your book? Should they read it from beginning to end, or use it as a reference book and read it by topic when they have a particular interest or need?

Teens should read the book through and then suggest their parents read it. Then the conversations should begin. I don't expect kids to agree with everything but talking about this stuff will make you smarter and develop critical thinking.

Any kid who reads the book will be ahead of the pack. And it will be interesting to see what your parents think.

Do you intend to write more books for this age group? TeenFX.com is all about teen communication by teens writing articles on their interests and concerns. Is there anything that you would particularly like to share with TeenFX users?

This is probably the last kid book for me.

I would like TeenFX users to critique the book. That would be fascinating for me to see. So read it, write a review (be as critical as you want, I am) and send it along. I may even read some of your reviews on the air.

Thanks TeenFX!

Bill O'Reilly is a perv who has lost a $4 million lawsuit over his threatening phone sex he had with a co-worker. His books contain pornography, as he described a guy getting an erection while taking a shower with a female. He repeatedly has segments on his tv show which are nothing but gratuitous sex. For example, for several nights, he ran segments about someone who had videotaped cheereleaders. That was his top news issue for several nights. One wonders if he is pleasuring himself under his desk. He is a perv, and all young girls as well as boys should steer clear of him.

Bill O'Reilly is an informed tv broadcaster and a great political role model as well as a general role model for all teens who have a brain and do not base their opinions solely off of the opinions of celebrities. also for the person who talked about Mr. O'Reilly's "issue" where he paid 4,000,000 dollars I don't know what dope told you that but all I have to say is check your facts. Bill O'Reilly rocks and I'm so glad to see other supporters on here!!!!!!!!

And he cashed in by joining in on the lynching campaigns against Michael Jackson and R.Kelly? The guy is a wingnut!

Emma 04-25-06
I don't need to get into detail.... This guy should be revoked ov his citizenship.

Bruce 04-15-06
Yeah, I know. This guy is a sex pervert, who had to pay someone he had assaulted over $4,000,000 to shut up (she had tapes of his calling her). He probably spends his days walking around parks, picking up little boys and girls. I have left posts about his phone sex with Andrea Mackis on here, and they have been deleted. Let's see how long this one lasts. THIS SEX PERVERT SHOULD BE IN JAIL, INSTEAD HE IS ON FOX NEWS

Wow, good interview. Bill O'Reilly is one of people I look up to. I watch the O'Reilly factor everyday. I still haven't got the book, I've been wantin it for months, maybe get my parents to buy for me. :)

If our only "drives"were for food, sex and sleep...we would be indistinguishable from any animal. While we are hardwired to desire food, sex and sleep for basic survival, humans have a rare ability to transcend any the physical to seek a higher spiritual ground.

While it is good that Mr. O'Reilly's name is on a book that speaks to teens about good moral values. It would have more power if Mr. O'Reilly controlled his passion for power and his other appetites and lived morally as well.

An interesting interview from a guy that I thought was only interested in creating a stir. Obviously he is concerned about teens otherwise he wouldn't have written this book.

Having been a long time viewer of Mr. O'Reilly's show, I jumped at the opportunity to read his 'survival guide' for kids. It truly is informative, realistic and related to teens in today's society. Covering a range of topics, from money to self-esteem, I recommend it to everyone on TeenFX!

tim 10-18-04
I like the fact that you voice your opinions! Whether you are right or wrong, I respect you for choosing a side and voicing your opinions on Fox News, magazine articles and now this book. I am interested to hear what you have to say to teens. It also cool that you talk about your own stories. Later.

Jess 10-15-04
I'll put it in my Shopping Cart!

If you are looking for a book that discusses topics such as sex, drugs, friendships, and all of the teenage issues this is an excellent novel to read. It also includes stories, personal experiences, and plenty of tidbits. It is comparable to the Chicken Soup for the Soul books. Certainly the best thing about The O'Reilly Factor for Kids was the game plan. O'Reilly has expressed his ideas for teenagers, and given them steps to creating a plan to overcome a dispute in their life, such as death, divorce and troubles with your first job. Quite a bit of this book is using common sense, which is something everybody needs to be reminded of every so often! My name is Sally, and, I am an editor from TeenFX.com who was asked to read and review this novel.

I live in India. I keep hearing of lots of personality/aptitude development courses and people trying to make money out of what they call 'training'. But I always thought if you wanted to make yourself better, you should do it yourself. I guess this book will be a boost to teens who want to better themselves, to overcome the regular teen problems but don't know how. I'll surely check this book out if I can lay my hands on it.

Jana 10-10-04
Nice interview. I think I would find this book useful.

Noel 10-09-04
I read your book through a pre-read program and it was really great. I was surprised at how much i liked your book. It helped me see things different. My parents are divorced and you chapter on that really helped a lot. It's funny cauze I found my mom with it a few times, even she read it and we actually talked about it. I didn't know who Mr. O'Reilly was before I read the book, now I do and im glad i had the chance to read your book.

I really liked your advice, and your plans to success (or that's what I call them). I have read books similar like this, but they were more focused on the adult lifestyle. I think it's awesome to have a good read out there, that has a main focus on youth!!!

Tessa 10-01-04
Cool interview! Not quite same old same old.

Denise 09-30-04
This is a change and I really enjoyed reading this interview. The comments on the Message Board are good too. I think this would be a useful book to have around.

Alex 09-29-04
As a TeenFX editor, I got to read The O'Reilly Factor for Kids before its official release, which was a very exciting thing. I live in Romania but can relate to all the problems discussed in this book.

One of the very interesting issues the book is dealing with is... friends and bullies. In your youth, it's very tough to notice the difference between the people that want to hurt you and those that truly want to be there for you, no matter what.

My favourite chapter is the one about death, as I have lost people that I :)d and felt my life would never be the same without them. You mustn't try to postpone healing after the loss of a :)d one, or decide to just give up life.

I found the book really inspirational and the interview contains some interesting facts about it.

Doug 09-29-04
This is quite a surprise seeing O'Reilly on TeenFX! It is a cool interview and presents a side to this man that we don't normally see on TV.

tim 09-27-04
You seem to have a very practical thoughts for everything. That doesn't mean they are correct though. I am sure your book will be interesting to read. Maybe I can write a book report on it for school :)

Daphnie C. 09-27-04
One thing I really :) being a TeenFX Editor is that I get to read some have-not-been-launched books first. I read a preview copy of this book and after reading this book, I really learned a lot. I learned more than I thought I knew. As the book claims to be a survival guide for America’s families, I strongly recommend every teenager should read this book and shape your own identity through this book rather than having your friends to shape your own identity. So, get a copy now and let this book be your guide to have a memorable teenager hood. Enjoy!

Kay 09-26-04
I think that a book that tries to help teens with their different issues without forcing ideas onto the teens is a very good idea because we all need a little bit of help and it's nice to hear about it from someone who isn't a parent or adult figure that you know because then you just think they're making up some stupid story to try to keep you from doing something or to try to get you to do it. I'd go and get this book just for the chapter on self-esteem because it sounds interesting, although I'd read the entire thing just to get more information about ways I can fix up other aspects of my life.

Sarah 09-26-04
This hardly sounds like the guy on TV! He has said several things that I agree with, so I would be interested to read his book.
